The boys across the ditch are giving new meaning to the phrase fight camp.
Lockdown in Auckland means UFC middleweight champion Isarael Adesanya and his crew have had to drag their mattresses into the gym and set up their own bubble.
“Eat, sleep, train, repeat. It’s actually been pretty cool,” Adesanya said, as he and his team deal with preparing for UFC 253 under lockdown.
Izzy will take on the Brazilian juice monkey (his words, not ours) Paulo Costa on September 27.
And fight camp this go around has been taken to a new level, covid meaning it's full school camp shit going on at the central Auckland fight Mecca.
Mattresses on the floor and all, the boys are loving it.
“We got a select few here and it’s cool man,” Adesanya said.
“It felt nostalgic almost when we first got here. I did this in China before, sleeping on a single mattress on the floor.
“But I upgraded the mattress now. Now I’m sleeping like a king in here, waking up, getting my work in, repeat. It’s cool, there’s a cool vibe with everyone here doing it together.”
Fellow Kiwis Kai Kara-France (YKTR's favourite son), Brad Riddell and Shane Young will all travel with the middleweight champion for the September event.
Aussie Jake Matthews is also on the card, giving it a real down-under takeover feel.
A location has yet to be revealed, but it is likely to be held at 'Fight Island' in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates’ capital.
